1,987 Bands, 41 Shows: The Live Music Gap in California Metal in 2026
As of 2026-08-24, California Metal Index indexes 1,987 bands across the state — and just 41 upcoming shows. That works out to roughly one scheduled show for every 48 bands in the database. It's the single most striking number in our current dataset, and it says less about the health of California metal than it does about where the scene's energy is actually concentrated: in recording, in genre identity, and in city-level density, rather than in a steady stream of live bookings tracked at any given moment.
None of this means California metal is quiet. It means the state's metal population is enormous relative to the live calendar we're currently tracking, and that gap is worth breaking down by genre and by city.
Death Metal Is the Default Genre
Of the 1,987 bands in the index, 654 are tagged Death Metal — by far the largest single genre and more than 100 bands ahead of second-place Black Metal at 436. Thrash Metal, the genre most associated with California's metal identity historically, sits close behind at 423. Together, Death Metal bands, Black Metal bands, and Thrash Metal bands account for 1,513 of the 1,987 total entries — roughly three out of every four bands in the database carry at least one of those three tags.
The rest of the top 10 shows a long tail rather than a second tier of comparable size. Heavy Metal (217) and Doom Metal (185) are the only other genres above 150 bands. Progressive Metal (145), Grindcore (123), Sludge Metal (103), and a tie between Melodic Death Metal and Power Metal at 87 apiece round out the list.

Los Angeles Alone Holds a Quarter of the State's Bands
Los Angeles accounts for 494 of the 1,987 bands in the index — roughly 25% of the entire state total from a single city. San Diego (141) and San Francisco (128) are a clear second tier, followed by Oakland (88) and Sacramento (77). No other city cracks 60 bands.

Where the Shows Actually Are
The band-count rankings and the show-count rankings don't line up cleanly, and that mismatch is the more interesting story. Sacramento has 77 bands on record — a fraction of Los Angeles's 494 — but currently shows 6 upcoming shows, tied with Los Angeles for the most of any city we track. Oakland, meanwhile, has 88 bands and zero scheduled shows, the same count as Orange County (24 bands) and Santa Rosa (23 bands).
San Diego and San Francisco each show 3 upcoming shows against band counts of 141 and 128, respectively. San Jose (53 bands, 2 shows) and Long Beach (26 bands, 2 shows) post similar show totals despite a roughly 2-to-1 gap in band population. Santa Cruz, with just 34 bands indexed, has 1 upcoming show — proportionally closer to Sacramento's ratio than to Oakland's.
Read across the full state, the 41 total upcoming shows are distributed across 153 venues we track — meaning most venues in our index don't currently have a metal show on the calendar at all. That's consistent with a scene whose identity is built on band count and genre density more than on a constantly full live calendar; the full upcoming shows list reflects a snapshot, not the total volume of shows that happen in California in a given year.
New Bands Formed in 2026
Band formation hasn't slowed down. Among the newest entries in the index, five bands list 2026 as their formation year: Aeterna Mortus, Appelman, Arcane Asylum, Armed for Apocalypse, and Casket Mush. Their names alone hint at the genre split documented above — Aeterna Mortus and Arcane Asylun read toward the extreme-metal side of the ledger, while Armed for Apocalypse leans into the heavier, riff-driven end that dominates the Death Metal and Thrash Metal counts.
The existence of five newly formed bands already logged in 2026 — a year that isn't over — suggests the 1,987 figure will keep climbing. Whether the 41-show figure grows at a comparable rate is a separate question, and one we'll be able to answer only by tracking the calendar over time.

These figures come from California Metal Index's own database of bands, shows, and venues headquartered in and around California. As of 2026-08-24, the index tracks 1,987 bands, 153 venues, and 41 upcoming shows. Genre counts reflect self-reported or tagged genre classifications per band and are not mutually exclusive, since bands may carry more than one genre tag. City-level band and show counts are based on each band's or venue's primary listed city in the index. This data is proprietary to California Metal Index and is not aggregated from outside sources.
