Phobia is a grindcore band from Orange County, California, formed in 1990 and one of the longer-lived American acts in the genre. Operating in the tradition of crust punk and grindcore with explicitly socio-political and anarchist lyrical content, the band released albums across labels including Slap-a-Ham, Willowtip, Relapse, and Deep Six Records, with Means of Existence (1998), Serenity Through Pain (2001), and Cruel (2006) among their key releases. Their sound adheres to blastbeat-driven grindcore orthodoxy, distinguished by consistent political conviction rather than genre experimentation.
San Diego's Posercorpse have been fusing death metal's riff vocabulary with grindcore's propulsive speed since 2018, operating in the underground tradition of bands that take the name seriously — no pretension, just ferocity. Southern California's extreme scene runs deep, and Posercorpse represent its blunter, less polished edge.
Despite the Hudson Valley name, Poughkeepsie emerged from Los Angeles in 2018 to deliver brutal death metal and grindcore collisions that are blunt, merciless, and deliberately abrasive. Their sound trades in the visceral economy of grind — songs that explode and end before you've fully registered the damage — alongside the churning, guttural density of brutal death. LA's underground has long incubated this kind of uncompromising extremity, and Poughkeepsie fits squarely in that lineage.
California's Pulpit Vomit launched in 2022 as a grindcore project with an irreverent, blasphemous edge built into the name and the music alike — bursts of caustic noise kept as brief and as violent as the genre demands. Their Bandcamp presence suggests an overlap in identity with the Atlanta sludge band Pulpit, but they operate as a distinct grind entity.
Bay Area extreme metal mainstay since 2005, blending death metal, crossover thrash, and grindcore into a chaotic, low-fidelity assault that draws on the Northern California underground's long tradition of genre-defying extremity.
