San Diego's Thousand Below craft emotionally heavy post-hardcore that spans from crushing metalcore anthems to atmospheric rock and heartfelt ballads, anchored by vocalist James Deberg's ability to channel raw vulnerability into cathartic musical moments. Formed in 2016 after Deberg's departure from Outlands, the band quickly earned a deal with Rise Records and built a devoted following with albums that wear their heart on their sleeve. Their fourth studio album 'Buried In Jade' demonstrates the continued evolution of a band that refuses to be confined to a single sonic identity.
Irvine · 1998–present · active
Orange County's Thrice have spent over two decades evolving from post-hardcore firebrands into one of rock's most artistically restless and respected bands, with each album representing a deliberate stylistic leap. From the hardcore fury of 'The Illusion of Safety' through the experimental four-element concept of 'The Alchemy Index' to the atmospheric beauty of 'Horizons/East,' Dustin Kensrue's thoughtful lyricism and the band's chameleonic musicianship have attracted a fiercely devoted following. Thrice's refusal to repeat themselves, combined with their consistent live excellence, has earned them a legacy as one of post-hardcore's most important and enduring acts.
Los Angeles · 2007–present · active
Touche Amore formed in Los Angeles in 2007 and became one of post-hardcore's most emotionally articulate bands by pairing frantic brevity with plainspoken vulnerability. Their early records, To the Beat of a Dead Horse and Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me, established a sound built from rushing drums, ringing guitars, and Jeremy Bolm's cracked, urgent vocal delivery. Is Survived By expanded the architecture, while Stage Four turned grief over Bolm's mother's death into the band's most devastating and widely recognized statement. Lament and Spiral in a Straight Line continued to refine the balance between melodic sweep, hardcore economy, and lyrical self-interrogation. Touche Amore fit punk, hardcore, and post-hardcore scope directly; their music comes from basement intensity even when the arrangements grow larger. The band is heavy in feeling as much as volume, using short songs and direct language to avoid melodrama. At their best, Touche Amore make emotional exposure feel disciplined, letting nervous guitars and relentless percussion carry the parts of grief that ordinary speech cannot hold.
Sacramento · 2013–present · active
Wolf & Bear are a Sacramento post-hardcore band connected to the Blue Swan and modern progressive post-hardcore world, with a sound that mixes agile guitar work, high-energy vocals, and rhythmically busy arrangements. Formed in 2013, the group came out of Northern California's hardcore and post-hardcore environment and built its identity through releases such as Everything Is Going Grey, the self-titled EP, and Bloodletter. Their music is often placed near the swancore lineage because of the quick, melodic guitar lines, elastic bass movement, and interplay between clean and harsh vocals, but Wolf & Bear keep enough grit to avoid sounding purely decorative. Songs can turn from bright, technical passages into shouted tension and then back into hook-driven motion, giving the band a restless and colorful profile. The connection to Dance Gavin Dance through shared members and scene proximity is part of the context, but Wolf & Bear work as their own unit because the songs are compact, urgent, and rhythmically alive. Their appeal lies in balancing complexity with momentum. Rather than using technical playing as a display case, they fold it into songs that feel anxious, animated, and built for movement, giving progressive post-hardcore a sharp Sacramento voice.
