17 Shows, Zero California Dates: Inside the Touring Habits of the Golden State's 25 Busiest Bands
As of 2026-09-01, California Metal Index indexes 25 California-based bands with confirmed upcoming show counts ranging from 3 to 17. The band sitting at the top of that list, death metal/grindcore act Citizen, has 17 shows on the books — more than any other California act we track. Their next date, however, is not in California. It's in Silver Spring, Maryland, on 2026-09-01.
That pattern repeats across nearly the entire list. Of the 25 most active touring bands in our index, only three — Hail the Sun, Return to Dust, and Guns N' Roses — have their next indexed show inside California. The other 22 are booked in Dallas, Amsterdam, San Antonio, Denver, Toronto, Dublin, Adelaide, and a string of UK cities. California's most active bands, in other words, are touring everywhere except home.

Across these 25 acts, our index counts 178 total upcoming shows. Only a handful of those next-show entries land inside state lines. Hail the Sun plays San Luis Obispo on 2026-09-08, Return to Dust plays Anderson on 2026-09-04, and Guns N' Roses plays Pasadena on 2026-09-05. Everyone else on this list is currently routed through Texas, the East Coast, the UK, Canada, Germany, Ireland, or Australia.
This isn't a data error — it's a reflection of how touring economics work for bands at this level. Acts like Black Label Society, L.A. Guns, and Faster Pussycat built their fanbases decades ago and now tour nationally and internationally in cycles that pass through home turf only occasionally. Newer, faster-touring acts like Citizen and Drain are following the same route-building logic on a compressed timeline, hitting East Coast and international markets before circling back.
Hard Rock Still Rules the Show Count
Genre tags across these 25 bands skew heavily toward legacy rock. Ten of the 25 acts carry a hard rock tag, including Black Label Society, Stone Temple Pilots, Dogstar, and Buckcherry. Five bands — Black Veil Brides, Faster Pussycat, L.A.
