Death Metal Claims a Third of California's 1,991 Indexed Metal Bands

October 4, 2026 · World Metal Index

As of 2026-10-04, California Metal Index tracks 1,991 bands across 20 distinct metal and heavy music subgenres in the state. One number stands out above the rest: Death Metal accounts for 654 of those bands — 33% of the entire index, and more than Black Metal and Thrash Metal combined do not quite match it on their own. This is not a close race. It's a genre that has, by sheer band count, become California's default metal export.

The Big Three

Death Metal, Black Metal, and Thrash Metal together account for 1,513 bands, or 76% of every band in the California Metal Index database. That means roughly three out of every four metal bands registered in the state identify primarily with one of these three subgenres. Black Metal sits at 436 bands (22%), and Thrash Metal follows closely at 423 bands (21%) — a one-point percentage gap and only 13 bands separating second and third place.

California's thrash lineage is well documented in the scene itself, and the current numbers back up the state's reputation: 423 active Thrash Metal bands is not a small figure for a single subgenre, even if it now trails both Death Metal and Black Metal in raw count. Readers can browse the full roster of Thrash Metal bands or compare it directly against the Death Metal bands currently indexed.

The Long Tail

Past the top four genres, the numbers drop off fast. Heavy Metal holds fourth place with 217 bands (11%), a solid fourth but less than a third the size of the Death Metal field. Doom Metal (185 bands, 9%) and Progressive Metal (145 bands, 7%) round out the next tier, followed by Grindcore at 123 bands (6%) and Sludge Metal at 103 bands (5%).

From there, the index settles into a cluster of subgenres each holding roughly 4% of the total. Melodic Death Metal and Power Metal are tied exactly at 87 bands apiece — an unusual dead heat between two genres that rarely share a bill. Stoner Metal (78), Groove Metal (76), and Metalcore (73) trail closely behind, each within single digits of one another.

At the bottom of the list, Brutal Death Metal (66 bands), Crossover Thrash (51), Deathcore (42), Speed Metal (41), Hardcore (38), Hard Rock (36), and Raw Black Metal (33) each represent 3% or less of the index individually. Combined, these seven smaller categories still account for 307 bands — more than Doom Metal and Progressive Metal put together, a reminder that California's underground is wide even where individual subgenres are thin.

What the Numbers Suggest

The data points to a state scene built on extremity. Death Metal, Black Metal, and Grindcore combined make up 1,213 bands — 61% of the index — compared to more melodic or accessible categories like Power Metal, Metalcore, and Hard Rock, which together hold just 196 bands, or roughly 10%. If you're building a show lineup in California and want to reflect what bands actually exist here, the math favors harsh and fast over polished and radio-friendly by a wide margin.

It's also worth noting what's absent from extreme dominance: Melodic Death Metal, often treated as a mainstream gateway subgenre elsewhere, holds just 87 bands here — fewer than half of Doom Metal's count. California's metal identity, at least by this measure, leans harder toward the unpolished and aggressive end of the spectrum than toward crossover-friendly melodic forms.

For those looking to see any of this play out live, California Metal Index's upcoming shows page reflects the same genre mix in real time — bookers and promoters pulling from the same pool of 1,991 bands this data describes.

Methodology

This analysis is based on California Metal Index's internal database of bands, shows, and venues across California, current as of 2026-10-04. Band counts reflect the primary subgenre tag assigned to each band in our index; some bands may play across multiple styles but are counted once under their listed primary genre. Percentages are rounded to the nearest whole number as provided in our dataset and may not sum to exactly 100% due to rounding. This data is proprietary to California Metal Index and is not aggregated from any external source.
