Black Cobra are a sludge and doom metal duo from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2001 by guitarist/vocalist Jason Landrian and drummer Rafael Martinez, who generate a surprisingly massive sonic footprint for a two-piece. Their early releases Bestial (2006) and Feather & Stone (2007) established a heavy, groove-oriented sound drawing equally from doom, sludge, and noise rock, and the band maintained a prolific output throughout the 2000s and 2010s with releases on Southern Lord and Season of Mist.
Founded by Zakk Wylde in Los Angeles in 1998 after his legendary tenure as Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist, Black Label Society channel southern-fried heaviness through Wylde's signature pinch harmonics and biker aesthetic. Albums like 'Stronger Than Death' and 'Mafia' deliver crushing riffs alongside surprisingly tender piano ballads, showcasing the duality that defines Wylde as a musician. The 'BLS' brand has become a lifestyle as much as a band, with a global chapter system of devoted fans.
Black Sheep Wall is a Moorpark, California sludge and doom metal band formed in 2006, named after a StarCraft cheat code. Their minimalist, downtuned approach draws comparisons to Eyehategod and early ISIS, delivering some of the heaviest and most oppressive post-metal to emerge from the American West Coast. Notable releases include No Matter Where It Ends (Season of Mist, 2012) and I'm Going to Kill Myself (2015), albums that pair crushing riff architecture with extended dynamic tension.
Black Veil Brides reignited glam metal theatricality for the Hot Topic generation, pairing Andy Biersack's commanding stage presence with anthemic, dual-guitar-driven metal that owes as much to Kiss and Motley Crue as it does to modern metalcore. Albums like 'Wretched and Divine' and 'Vale' cemented them as one of the most polarizing yet commercially successful rock acts of the 2010s.
Body Count is a Los Angeles heavy metal band formed in 1990 by rapper Ice-T and lead guitarist Ernie C, both of whom met as classmates at Crenshaw High School. Their 1992 self-titled debut on Sire Records drew national controversy over 'Cop Killer,' a song that prompted label pressure and was voluntarily pulled by Ice-T from subsequent pressings. The band is credited with helping pioneer rap metal, and after decades of continued activity, they won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance at the 2021 ceremony for 'Bum Rush' from Carnivore (2020).
Bonded by Blood is a thrash metal band formed in 2005 in Pomona, California, named directly after the classic Exodus album of the same title. Rooted in the Bay Area thrash tradition, the band self-released their debut EP Extinguish the Weak in 2007, which earned them a deal with Earache Records. Their debut full-length Feed the Beast (2008) and follow-ups Exiled to Earth (2010) and The Aftermath (2012) established them as committed revivalists of 1980s Bay Area aggression.
Boy Hits Car formed in 1993 in the Los Angeles area with a goal of making melodic heavy music that could survive the force of a high-energy live show. The band developed a sound they called "LoveCore," combining alternative metal, hard rock, world-music accents, emotional lyrics, and the dramatic vocal presence of Cregg Rondell. Their independent debut My Animal set the foundation, but the 2001 self-titled album on Wind-up brought them wider attention, especially through songs like "I'm A Cloud" and "LoveFuryPassionEnergy." The band's music often moves between tribal percussion, 12-string acoustic textures, distorted guitar surges, and cathartic choruses, giving their heavier moments a spiritual and communal tone rather than pure aggression. Later albums such as The Passage, Stealing Fire, and All That Led Us Here continued refining their mix of uplift, turbulence, and groove. Boy Hits Car have remained active across decades through touring and independent releases, sustaining a cult following around emotionally intense performances and an unusually warm take on alt-metal.
Brain Drill is a technical death metal band from Ben Lomond, California, formed in 2005 by guitarist Dylan Ruskin as a side project that rapidly became the primary vehicle for his hyper-speed compositional ideas. Cannibal Corpse bassist Alex Webster personally recommended the band to Metal Blade Records, who signed them in 2007 and released Apocalyptic Feasting (2008) and Quantum Catastrophe (2010), both regarded as extreme examples of speed and technical precision in the genre. The band self-released a third album, Boundless Obscenity, in 2016 before disbanding in 2019.
Brant Bjork is a Palm Desert, California musician best known as a founding drummer and songwriter of Kyuss, the desert rock band he helped form in the late 1980s alongside Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri, and John Garcia. After departures from Kyuss and Fu Manchu, Bjork launched a prolific solo career beginning with Jalamanta (1999), exploring funk-inflected stoner rock, acoustic desert blues, and heavy psych across more than a dozen solo albums on labels including Low Desert Punk and Heavy Psych Sounds. He remains one of the most recognized ambassadors of the Southern California Palm Desert scene that gave birth to the stoner rock movement.
