Los Angeles's Wind from the Valley formed in 2023 at the intersection of doom metal and post-metal, a combination that allows them to build from crushing heaviness into something more spacious and atmospheric. For a city better known for its sprawl than its slowness, the band carves out a reflective, immersive space that lets each riff breathe and expand.
Formed in Upland, California in 2002 under the name Bleak December before renaming in 2005, Winds of Plague are among the few deathcore bands to prominently integrate symphonic elements — orchestral keyboards, choir arrangements — into the genre's blast-beat and breakdown architecture. Their Century Media debut Decimate the Weak (2008) brought the approach to a wide audience, and subsequent albums including The Great Stone War (2009) and Against the World (2011) expanded their reach within the symphonic deathcore niche. The band has remained active through multiple lineup changes over two decades.
Formed in Los Angeles in 2022, Wings of Steel belong to the city's tradition of traditional heavy metal acts who look back to the genre's foundational era — NWOBHM riffing, soaring clean vocals, and a commitment to the metal aesthetic that the LA scene has never entirely let go of. They arrive late to the revival but with clear conviction for the craft.
Los Angeles's Winter Reign have been evolving since 2018, moving from gothic metal's dark, orchestral drama toward progressive metal and alternative textures — a trajectory that shows a band more interested in growth than in genre allegiance. The LA environment, with its production resources and scene diversity, has clearly given them room to stretch across stylistic lines.
San Luis Obispo's Wintersfear have been honing melodic death metal fused with thrash aggression since 2012, an unusual formation for California's laid-back Central Coast but one that has produced a tight, technically capable band over more than a decade. The melodic and the brutal pull against each other productively in their sound, keeping things sharp and forward-moving.
Brand new as of 2025, Concord, California's WinterSorrow arrive with gothic metal drama wrapped in symphonic grandeur — a style that draws on the full orchestral palette to frame heavy metal beneath layers of atmosphere and dark romance. It's early days, but the symphonic gothic metal form has a devoted audience, and WinterSorrow are already building within its most expressive traditions.
A very recent arrival from Santa Cruz, California, Witch Whores of Satan formed in 2024 and lean into the fuzz-soaked stoner doom aesthetic with a name that signals absolutely no interest in subtlety. Santa Cruz's countercultural coastal identity feeds naturally into their hazy, riff-forward approach. Still in their earliest days, they are already carving out space in the California underground with pure heaviness.
With Passion formed in Sacramento, California in 2002, drawing from European melodic death metal — particularly At the Gates and Dissection — and the technical metalcore emerging from the US and Canada in the early 2000s. The band released two albums on Earache Records, In the Midst of Bloodied Soil (2005) and What We See When We Shut Our Eyes (2007), before disbanding that same year. Though short-lived, they were noted for their technical precision and the blackened edge they brought to the melodic metalcore sound.
Witherfall was formed in Los Angeles, California in 2013 by vocalist Joseph Michael and guitarist Jake Dreyer, both veterans of White Wizzard, channeling dark progressive and power metal in the tradition of Queensrÿche and Fates Warning. Their 2017 debut Nocturnes and Requiems was shadowed by the death of original drummer Adam Sagan from lymphoma in December 2016, and the band's subsequent output — A Prelude to Sorrow (2018), The Curse of Autumn (2020), and Sounds of the Forgotten (2024) — has carried a thematic weight commensurate with that loss. They are regarded as one of the stronger acts in the modern progressive power metal revival.
