Smartsville, California's Divine Defecation — operating out of the rural Sierra Nevada foothills — arrived in 2023 with the blunt, purposeful aggression of brutal death metal and no interest in softening the edges. A newcomer in the grand tradition of California's grotesque BDM underground, they make music calibrated for the pit and nowhere else.
Divine Heresy is a Los Angeles-based technical death/groove metal band formed in 2006 by guitarist Dino Cazares, a co-founder of Fear Factory. The band's debut album Bleed the Fifth (2007) sold nearly 3,000 copies in its first week and showcased Cazares's mechanized riffing alongside vocalist Travis Neal and drummer Tim Yeung of Vital Remains. A second album, Bringer of Plagues, followed in 2009 via Century Media, co-produced by Logan Mader.
Los Angeles's Divola have been bending stoner metal through an experimental prism since 2013, producing music that swaps the subgenre's usual comfort-food riff cycles for something stranger and more unpredictable. Operating in the LA underground, they bring a psychedelic restlessness to heavy music that resists the familiar and keeps the listener off-balance.
San Francisco's Dizastor have been keeping Bay Area thrash's underground fires burning since 2013, operating in the direct lineage of a city that invented the genre's most aggressive permutations. Raw, fast, and built on the backbone of classic American thrash, they carry the tradition forward without nostalgia getting in the way of genuine aggression.
Dogma is a theatrical all-female heavy metal outfit whose costumed live performances channel the showmanship of Kiss and Alice Cooper alongside the modern heaviness of In This Moment and The Pretty Reckless. The band's melodic metal anthems and striking visual presentation have earned them festival slots and headline tours across North America and Europe.
Dogstar are a guitar-driven alternative rock trio whose story has always been grounded in friendship and unpretentious band chemistry. Bret Domrose's voice and guitar give the songs their melodic front, Robert Mailhouse's drums keep the arrangements direct, and Keanu Reeves' bass sits as a steady, warm anchor rather than a celebrity distraction. The band's first run produced Quattro Formaggi and Our Little Visionary, records shaped by the college-rock and grunge-era language of ringing guitars, mid-tempo push, and emotionally plainspoken songwriting. After a long dormancy, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees reintroduced Dogstar with a cleaner sound but a similar emphasis on sturdy songs over studio spectacle. The newer material has a relaxed confidence: guitars shimmer or thicken as needed, vocals stay understated, and the rhythm section favors feel over flash. Dogstar's music is not aggressive in a metal sense, but it carries a hard-strummed, 1990s-rooted weight that connects it to the broader guitar-rock continuum. The band's best songs work because they feel lived-in, modest, and built to survive outside the mythology around the people playing them.
Alhambra, California's Dominion have been carving out their corner of the West Coast death metal underground since 2016, trading in the kind of punishing, technically-minded brutality Southern California has long incubated. The band's Bandcamp presence under the "ashen" moniker hints at a sound steeped in ash-and-ruin imagery befitting the genre's bleakest tendencies. They represent the current generation of LA-area death metal acts keeping the flame burning in the shadow of the genre's old guard.
Encinitas, California's Doodlebob have been running their death-grind operation since 2015, injecting the San Diego County scene with the kind of short, savage blasts the subgenre demands. The juxtaposition of a cartoon-adjacent name against grinding death metal brutality is part of the genre's long tradition of absurdist irreverence — but the music itself pulls no punches. Fast, ugly, and unafraid to be ridiculous, they are a product of Southern California's deep grindcore underground.
Emerging from Fallbrook, California — a small town tucked between San Diego and the Inland Empire — Doomslayer has been channeling Southern California death metal's raw, unpolished tradition since 2020. Their sound carries the sun-baked grit of the region's underground, where dirt roads and desert heat seem to bake the brutality into the riffs themselves. It's no-frills death metal that doesn't chase trends, just pure heaviness rooted in the genre's foundational ugliness.
