Dorothy are a Los Angeles hard rock band fronted by vocalist and songwriter Dorothy Martin, whose voice gives the project its mix of grit, soul, and arena-sized force. Emerging in the mid-2010s, the band drew attention with a self-titled EP and the full-length ROCKISDEAD, which framed Martin's vocals inside bluesy riffs, swaggering rhythms, and modern rock production. 28 Days in the Valley, Gifts from the Holy Ghost, and later work broadened the emotional range, adding gospel, Southern rock, spiritual themes, and a stronger sense of personal recovery without abandoning the heavy guitar foundation. Dorothy fit hard-rock scope through blues rock riffing, big vocals, and a touring presence connected to contemporary mainstream rock and metal audiences. The songs are built around impact: stomps, claps, riffs, and choruses that leave room for Martin to push from smoky restraint to full-throated release. What separates Dorothy from simple retro rock is the emotional center. The music can be glamorous and polished, but it is strongest when faith, survival, heartbreak, and defiance all move through the same loud, blues-rooted frame.

Los Angeles-based Dowager has been building doom and sludge monoliths since 2014, a fitting project for a city where everything from the traffic to the smog seems to move at a funeral pace. Their sound carries the sprawling, oppressive weight of L.A.'s vastness — slow tempos, massive guitar tones, and a sludge-influenced abrasion that keeps the prettiness of doom metal from becoming comfortable. There's a distinctly urban ugliness to their sound, music made in and for a city that grinds people down.
Temecula · 1998–present · active
One of the longer-running acts in the American black/death underground, Temecula, California's Draconis have been forging their sound since 1998, navigating the tension between the corrosive atmospherics of black metal and the punishing technicality of death metal across nearly three decades. Their Southern California origin — far from the genre's Scandinavian birthplace — lends their work a sun-bleached ferocity that's distinctly their own.
Santa Cruz · 2014–present · active
Santa Cruz, California's Drain burst onto the hardcore scene with a ferocious blend of crossover thrash, skate punk energy, and hardcore punk attitude. Their debut 'California Cursed' became an instant classic of the modern hardcore revival, driven by Sammy Ciaramitaro's snarling vocals and riffs that recall DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, and Municipal Waste. The band's skater aesthetic and party-thrash approach have made them one of the most exciting live acts in contemporary hardcore.
Baldwin Park · 2016–present · active
Baldwin Park's Dread Party have been making a chaotic mess of Southern California's grindcore scene since 2016, delivering the short, savage bursts of noise and fury the genre demands with a sardonic edge baked into their very name. Their sound hits hard and fast, treating brevity as a weapon and leaving no room for anything as indulgent as a hook. In a genre built on volume and velocity, they excel by keeping every second purposeful.
Los Angeles · 2021–present · active
Los Angeles one-person project Dreadful Nihilism emerged in 2021 blending depressive black metal with ambient textures, creating a sound that turns the city's sprawling emotional anonymity into something hauntingly internal. The ambient component adds space and desolation to what is already a genre of extreme introspection, resulting in music that feels less like performance and more like documentation of a particular darkness. Their Metal Archives classification as "Depressive Black Metal/Ambient" hints at a project willing to slow down and let the despair breathe.

Dream Boy is a Los Angeles guitar-rock project whose available recordings point toward a concise, melody-first take on punk-rooted alternative rock. The 2018 demos "Agate Eyes" and "Shanghai Blue" present the band in a raw but focused form, favoring direct song structures, crunchy guitars, and a tone that reaches back to 1990s underground rock without turning into pure revivalism. The music sits in the space where punk economy, college-rock looseness, and power-pop melody overlap: short enough to feel immediate, melodic enough to linger, and rough enough to keep the emotional edges visible. Dream Boy's identity is less about a long public discography than a specific sound and atmosphere, with the recordings suggesting a band interested in hooks, nervous energy, and guitar texture rather than heavy production. The project's best qualities are in its compactness: songs that feel like sketches, but sketches with enough character to make the listener imagine a full set of noisy, scrappy, 90s-styled rock songs around them.

Formed in Los Angeles in 2025, Dreamer represents one of the most recently active entries in the extreme progressive metal category — a subgenre that demands technical command and compositional vision in equal measure. Los Angeles has long incubated metal acts willing to push into difficult territory, and Dreamer's placement in the extreme progressive space signals a commitment to uncompromising sonic complexity. Their catalog is still early, but the intent is evident from the start.

Operating out of California since 2019, Dreaming Void pursues black metal in a state better known for its sun than its darkness, which makes the project's cold and atmospheric output feel like a deliberate negation of its surroundings. The band works in the raw, expansive tradition of the genre — building environments more than songs, letting texture and repetition do the structural work that conventional arrangement would otherwise handle. It's black metal as landscape rather than performance.
