Torrance, California's Teeth Gnashers have been grinding out raw black metal fused with punk aggression since 2009, one of the longer-running acts in LA's subterranean extreme scene. Their black/punk hybrid strips both genres down to their most feral essentials — speed, scorn, and maximum filth.

Los Angeles' Temple of Dagon have been conjuring death/thrash savagery since 2014, fusing the crust punk grit of the California underground with the skull-splitting attack of old-school death and thrash. Their Lovecraftian namesake suits music this primordial — filthy, fast, and hostile, built on riffs that feel dredged from somewhere beneath the ocean floor.

Formed in San Diego in 2023, Terminating Death are among the newer voices in the city's underground, working the intersection of blackened sludge and doom metal with a sense of controlled devastation. Their sound layers black metal's corrosive atmosphere over sludge's lumbering heaviness — slow, dark, and entirely uninterested in accessibility.

Orange County's Terrible Tales Untold arrived in 2024 bringing gothic metal's moody grandeur to the Southern California underground — an uncommon choice in a scene dominated by harder-edged extremity. Their sound traffics in the atmospheric sweep and melodic melancholy that defines the genre, dark romanticism given weight by genuine metal instrumentation.

Los Angeles hardcore institution Terror, founded by vocalist Scott Vogel after his tenure in Buried Alive, have been one of the most consistently furious and touring-obsessed bands in hardcore since 2002. Their sound is a no-frills, relentless assault of aggressive hardcore punk driven by Vogel's commanding bark, gang vocals, and mosh-inducing breakdowns that have kept the band on the road nearly every week of every year. Albums like 'One with the Underdogs' and 'The 25th Hour' deliver exactly what Terror's devoted following demands: uncompromising, pit-ready hardcore with zero pretension.

Los Angeles grindcore band Terrorizer formed in 1986 around vocalist Oscar Garcia, guitarist Jesse Pintado, and drummer Pete Sandoval, recording their sole classic lineup album World Downfall in 1989 for Earache Records with Morbid Angel's David Vincent producing and playing bass. The album has since been recognized as a foundational text of grindcore, and the band briefly dissolved after Pintado joined Napalm Death and Sandoval returned to Morbid Angel. A reformed lineup released Darker Days Ahead in 2006, though the original lineup never reconvened.

Testament formed in Berkeley, California in 1983 under the name Legacy and adopted their current name before releasing The Legacy (1987), positioning them among the first wave of Bay Area thrash alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Exodus. Vocalist Chuck Billy — of Pomo Native American descent — joined in 1986 and has fronted the band through fifteen studio albums, including the acclaimed The New Order (1988), Practice What You Preach (1989), and the modern comeback Titans of Creation (2020). The band is considered part of the 'Big Eight' of thrash metal and has remained one of the genre's most active and consistent forces for over four decades.
