Moorpark, California's Light Being strip black metal to its raw spiritual core, their music reaching inward through dissonance and tremolo toward something genuinely transcendent since 2016.
Linkin Park redefined rock at the turn of the millennium by fusing nu-metal heaviness with hip-hop flow and electronic production on 'Hybrid Theory' and 'Meteora,' two of the best-selling rock albums of the 21st century. Chester Bennington's anguished vocals and Mike Shinoda's versatile rapping created an emotional resonance that transcended genre boundaries, and the band's continued evolution through 'Minutes to Midnight' and beyond cemented their status as one of rock's most important modern acts.
Lit turned barbed self-deprecation and crunchy power-pop guitars into one of the most durable sounds of late-1990s alternative radio. The Popoff brothers, Jeremy on guitar and A. Jay on vocals, gave the band a recognizable mix of sneer, melody, and party-damaged humor, while the rhythm section kept the songs tight and uncomplicated. A Place in the Sun made the breakthrough, led by "My Own Worst Enemy" and supported by singles like "Zip-Lock" and "Miserable." Those songs are glossy, but their appeal comes from a direct plug-in-and-go guitar feel: bright distortion, short riffs, fast choruses, and lyrics that make bad decisions sound painfully catchy. Lit's later catalog has moved through pop punk, alternative rock, country-tinged material, and mature power pop, but the band's identity still rests on a simple strength. They know how to make a three-minute guitar song feel loud, funny, wounded, and instantly memorable without overcomplicating the machinery or sanding down the riffs.
Born out of Los Angeles in 2020, Living Darkness channel classic heavy metal's dark, hook-driven spirit into a fresh sound rooted in atmosphere and riff weight.
Lizzy Borden is a Los Angeles heavy metal band formed in 1983 by vocalist Gregory Charles Harges, who performs and records under the band's name, and drummer Joey Scott. Rooted in the shock rock theatrics of Alice Cooper and Kiss, the band signed to Metal Blade Records in 1984 and released a string of albums through the late 1980s, reaching their commercial peak with Visual Lies (1987). After a prolonged hiatus, Lizzy Borden returned with My Midnight Things (2018), their first album in eleven years, which charted on the Billboard 200.
South San Francisco's Lokheira arrived in 2023 with a power metal sound built on soaring vocals, galloping rhythms, and the wide-open ambition of the Bay Area's metal tradition.
San Diego death metal outfit Lord Demise have been crafting unrelenting, riff-forward brutality since 2018, with the sun-scorched aggression of Southern California's underground.
Los Angeles doom metal act Lost Breed returned in 2025 after years away, dragging their slow, suffocating heaviness back into the light with zero urgency and maximum weight.
Hayward's Lychdom craft melodic death metal anchored in traditional heavy metal songcraft, keeping hooks within reach even as the tempos accelerate and the riffs grow more complex. Active since 2016, they're one of the Bay Area underground's better-kept secrets.
