Oakland · 2020–present · active
Oakland's Thanatopsis carry a storied name — the 19th-century poem meditating on death — into a death/thrash sound that has evolved from progressive roots toward leaner, more aggressive territory since forming in 2020. The Bay Area's tradition of technically proficient thrash and death metal runs through their DNA, updated with the sharp-edged intensity of Oakland's current underground.

Formed in 2024, Thanatotherion are among the newest voices in black metal's ever-expanding underground, the name itself — Greek for "beast of death" — staking a claim to the darkest corners of the tradition. Their approach is rooted in orthodox black metal's cold grammar, built for listeners who want the atmosphere of the void without unnecessary embellishment.
Oakland · 2015–present · active
Oakland's Thane have been cultivating their death/doom sound since 2015, drawing on the Bay Area's tradition of heavy, serious metal and steering it into the slower, more oppressive corridors of the genre hybrid. Their music shares the grinding patience of classic death-doom — long songs, cavernous production, and a heaviness that accumulates with deliberate intent.
· 1998–present · active
San Diego multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle launched The Album Leaf in 1998 as a solo project while playing guitar in post-rock band Tristeza, initially self-releasing limited cassette experiments in ambient texture and field recordings. The project gained international recognition after Sigur Rós took LaValle on tour, leading to the acclaimed Sub Pop release In a Safe Place (2004), a landmark of delicate, orchestrated instrumental ambient music. LaValle has continued releasing records under the name, expanding the project to include a full live band and occasional vocals.
Chino Hills · 2011–present · active
Chino Hills, California's The Armiger blend stoner metal's heavy, reverberated weight with alternative metal's more melodic and dynamic sensibilities, creating a sound that's equally suited to festival stages and smoky rehearsal spaces. Formed in 2011, they represent the Southern California approach to heavy music: sun-bleached but substantial, catchy but never lightweight.
Los Angeles · 2024–present · active
The Barbarians of California is the heavy side project of AWOLNATION's Aaron Bruno and longtime producer Eric Stenman, born from their shared roots in late-'90s California hardcore and skate culture. Rounded out by AWOLNATION members Zach Irons and Isaac Carpenter, the project strips away pop pretense in favor of raw, thrashy aggression that reconnects Bruno with his hardcore origins in bands like Insurgence.
· 2019–present · active
Assembled in Los Angeles in 2019 by vocalist Jordan Tyler and drummer Mark Hylander, The Bites are a Hollywood hard rock outfit devoted to the sleaze and swagger of 1980s glam and arena rock. Their debut album Squeeze channels Mötley Crüe-style hooks and Van Halen-influenced guitar work through a contemporary production sensibility, landing them tours supporting Sebastian Bach and The Dead Daisies. The band established themselves quickly on the LA club circuit before expanding to international audiences.
San Francisco · 2011–present · active
San Francisco's The Burial Tide have been submerging listeners in atmospheric sludge metal since 2011, building music that moves with the patient, crushing momentum of a tide that doesn't rush because it doesn't need to. Their sound captures something specific to the Bay Area underground — heavy, deliberate, and shot through with an ambience that feels earned rather than applied.
Los Angeles · 2022–present · active
Los Angeles' The Cimmerian draw on the ancient and barbaric spirit their name invokes — stoner/sludge metal built for the long haul, riff-heavy and swaggering with the kind of fuzz-soaked weight that the genre's best practitioners have always known how to deploy. Formed in 2022, they enter a Los Angeles heavy scene with deep roots and find their place in the lineage naturally.
